Custody & Visitation

Thinking Outside the Box

Workable, Win-Win Solutions for Child Custody

Emotions and fears run high where children are involved. You may feel that you have to go to court to get a fair shake. But when a judge determines custody and visitation, it can make life difficult for both parents — causing scheduling conflicts, resentment and a drastic shift in relationships with your children.

You and your soon-to-be-ex may not agree on everything, but no judge knows better than you what is in your children's best interests. At the law firm of Coorpender & Ramirez, we emphasize the collaborative law approach to child custody matters. We aim for amicable agreements that minimize the negative impact and give both parents the maximum amount of quality time with the kids.

Contact our Lake Dallas office at 940-321-0265 to arrange a free initial consultation. We represent clients in Denton County, Texas and throughout the DFW Metroplex in both negotiated custody arrangements and contested custody proceedings.

Collaborative Family Law

This out-of-court process involves an agreement not to litigate. It's a commitment to work out a fair and practical custody deal that keeps both parents involved in the child's life. We bring in psychologists, social workers or family counselors to work through the issues to arrive at creative and workable solutions.

For example, the court's standard possession order dictates which weekends, weeknights, holidays and vacation weeks the child spends with each parent. In collaborative law, we are not bound by any formula. We encourage clients to think outside the box to determine what would work best for you, your ex-spouse and — foremost — for the children.

We delve into each parent's concerns regarding education and extra-curricular activities, health care and upbringing, as well as the details of exchanges, number of overnights and child support. The result is a child custody agreement that both parties will adhere to and a better ongoing relationship with your ex.

Some clients want shared parenting — a 50-50 custody split with no child support. Bouncing back and forth between two homes can be frustrating and even unhealthy for kids. We make sure that clients truly consider the child's best interests and find a way to make it work.

What if the Other Parent Won't Negotiate?

If you have tried mediation without results, or the two of you aren't even on speaking terms, it may be necessary to resolve custody in court. Judges rely on home study reports to make their rulings, so getting the right social worker can be key. We know which professionals have a good reputation with the court for fair assessments, and we will fight for primary custody or the maximum amount of visitation.

Contact child custody lawyers who are committed to finding solutions that work for you. We offer a free, in-office consultation.

We understand the trust people place in their attorneys, and we are committed to earning that trust with each of our clients.
